Being a police officer is a dangerous job. There are so many hazards from needles, to weapons, and most dangerous of all, other people. Every day adds new and unknown situations and people that you have to assist and work with. The job is so dangerous in fact, that according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, every 60 hours an officer is killed in the line of duty.
It’s no surprise that you’re going to want the best equipment you can have to keep you safe and comfortable. The focus of this article is on finding the best police boots. I believe what you wear on your feet is arguably the most influential piece of gear you’ll wear throughout your career. Boots dictate how your feet, ankles, knees, and back function by creating better posture, absorbing shocks, and offering support.
Well, the problem is that most boot brands make claims about their quality and end up falling short. They raise prices based on popularity and brand recognition and not craftsmanship. It’s difficult to sift through all these false claims and find the top gear. That’s where I can help. I’ve got plenty of family members in service both military and police and they’ve given me honest and reliable reviews. I compiled the reviews, the list, and did a bit of my own research to bring you the absolute best boots for police.
What To Look For In The Best Police Duty Boots
Running Capabilities – Most boots are manufactured with the idea that they won’t be used for running. This is because most jobs don’t require the wearer to ever be put into a situation were running is needed. As a police officer you may find yourself in these types of situations on a fairly regular basis.
Traction – The grip of your boots has to be spectacular no matter the surface your on. One slip, trip, or fumble may cost you an injury, an arrest, or worse.
Comfort – Comfort is so important when looking at boots. You’re going to be wearing these 8-10 hours a day for 5-6 days a week. Inferior quality boots will have your feet sore by the end of the day. Also, boots have an indirect effect on your knees and back.
Durability – Your boots need to be capable of withstanding years of heavy use and abuse without faltering, slowing, or breaking down.
These factors are even more important if you are part of a tactical or swat team. I’d like to point out that these boots are not only for police. These are also the best correctional officer boots as well.
If you take anything away from this article it should be this. We all want to save a few bucks, but boots are not the item to do that with.
Police Boots Review
First up we have my personal favorite, the Acadia Boot. While these are by far the most expensive on the list, they are worth every single penny.
They’re made right here in the USA and are composed of an abrasion resistant leather and cordura(a highly durable synthetic fabric). They have a Gore-Tex waterproof lining that blocks out all water while remaining breathable to wick away sweat buildup.
For added support and comfort they have a fiberglass shank that adds to the stability of the boot. The soles are shock absorbing and spread the stress of running and walking on hard surfaces throughout the boot. They also have 400 grams of insulation which is perfect for colder weather.
With Danner’s famous stitch-down construction, high quality materials, and expert craftsmanship they will last for many years of heavy use.
Because they boots are so popular they sell out fast. Keep that in mind when making your decision.
Danner Tachyon Black GTX Boot Review
This boot is also made by Danner and has many of the same qualities without the same price-tag. Where the Acadia is more for tactical or swat members, the Tachyon is more casual. By no means is it a bad boot but it doesn’t have the same durability and quality of materials. The leather is full grain and the fabric is synthetic for superior weight savings.
They’re also manufactured in the USA and feature a breathable and comfortable liner. The out-soles use pentagonal lugs that offer incredible traction and slip resistance. The insoles are comfortable, shock absorbing and completely removable for easy cleaning and replacement.
What truly makes these boots so special is that they have been engineered to be ultra lightweight and flexible. They are great for training and special operations that require stealth and speed.
Overall these boots are snug, comfortable, and lightweight. There a perfect mix between the durability and strength of tactical boots and the speed and flexibility of hiking boots.
Original S.W.A.T is a popular brand among officers. They’re manufactured with the expertise and precision specifically for the civil service and it’s different branches. They are constructed with full grain leather and nylon a nylon upper. The gusseted tongue keeps debris from making its way into the boot. It has a perforated collar that makes the fit more comfortable and increase breathability.
The lining is antimicrobial which stops bad germs from spreading and causing irritation to your skin and nails. The insole is a custom fit EVA with performance cushioning pads. The Metro tactical offers plenty of heel and arch support and comfort.
Overall, these are an airport friendly, lightweight, and offer support and fatigue control.
Last but certainly not least we have the Thorogood Jump boot. They usually produce work boots but have tried their hand at service wear and it was a great success.
Goodyear storm welt constructed of high quality leather materials. The midsole is EVA compression molded with 300g of gel heel inserts. This helps to absorb and spread the impact stress. The insole is composed of a removable polyurethane cushion for extra comfort.
They do have a long break in period so I don’t suggest wearing them to work immediately.
